ProTracker** was one of the most famous music tracker programs on the Amiga, released in 1990 by the demogroup Amiga Freelancers.

It let users create music using short recorded sounds (*samples*) arranged in patterns — instead of traditional sheet music.

How it worked

ProTracker used a tracker interface, which looked like vertical columns of numbers and letters rather than musical notes on a staff.

You would:

• Load short samples (drums, bass, synth hits, voices, etc.)
• Place notes into a grid (patterns)
• Add effects (pitch bends, vibrato, volume slides)
• Chain patterns into a full song

Music was saved in MOD format (`.mod` files), which became hugely popular and spread across many platforms — including the Archimedes scene.

Why it mattered

• Standardized the 4-channel MOD format
• Powered much of the early 90s demo scene
• Influenced game music on many systems
• Inspired later trackers like FastTracker 2 and Impulse Tracker
