SGU-1

X65 SGU-1

Overview

The SGU-1, or Sound Generator Unit 1, is a modern sound processor developed for the X65 computer project.

The SGU-1 is not a reproduction of one particular historical sound chip. Instead, it combines ideas from several classic architectures, including Yamaha FM synthesis, the Commodore SID, OPL-style synthesis and sample-based audio.

Its architecture provides nine stereo channels, four operators per channel, programmable envelopes, multiple waveforms, a multimode filter and PCM sample playback.

Technical characteristics

Four-operator synthesis

Each channel contains four programmable operators. Their routing can be configured to create different FM and additive synthesis structures.

This gives the SGU-1 a connection to classic Yamaha FM chips such as the YM2151 while providing a considerably more flexible synthesis architecture.

Multiple waveforms

Unlike many traditional FM chips that primarily use sine waves, the SGU-1 provides several oscillator waveforms including sine, triangle, sawtooth, pulse and noise.

This makes it possible to create both classic FM-style sounds and more traditional subtractive synthesizer timbres.

Filter

The SGU-1 includes a programmable state-variable multimode filter. Its design is inspired in part by the filter found in the MOS SID 6581.

The filter can be used to shape the frequency spectrum of the generated sound, providing low-pass, high-pass and band-pass style processing.

PCM sample playback

The SGU-1 also supports PCM sample playback. A shared 64 KB sample memory can be used for samples or as a wavetable source for synthesis.

This allows the system to combine synthesized instruments with digital samples, making it a hybrid sound architecture rather than a conventional FM-only chip.

SGU Tracker

Music for the SGU-1 can be created using SGU Tracker , a tracker specifically designed around the SGU-1 architecture.

SGU Tracker is based on the ideas and workflow of klystrack and provides a pattern-based environment for creating music for the X65.

Historical importance

Although the SGU-1 is a modern design, it is interesting from a retro-computing perspective because it deliberately combines characteristics of several classic sound architectures.

Rather than simply reproducing one historical chip, the SGU-1 can be seen as a modern interpretation of the evolution of computer music hardware.
